Developing Algebraic & Geometric Habits of Mind Workshops

Date:
August 1, 2011 - 8:30am - August 5, 2011 - 3:30pm
Location:
Boston Area

Learn about the structure and philosophy of the CME Project mathematics curriculum for grades 8–12 in workshops led by authors and experienced teachers. Prepare to teach CME Project and gain confidence with the materials. Delve into the mathematics of CME Project and analyze the underlying pedagogical ideas as you address practical implementation issues such as pacing, differentiation, and assessment. Learn innovative approaches to develop students' "mathematical ways of thinking" or mathematical habits of mind, and see how mathematical ideas, skills, and themes are introduced early and strengthened throughout the program. By the end of the five days, you will leave with a deeper understanding of CME Project and strategies to deepen student understanding of high school mathematics and beyond.

Our workshops are designed for teachers who are new to the curriculum and for coaches who support CME Project implementation. They also are ideal for administrators and curriculum leaders who would like to understand the content and pedagogy of the curriculum.

Implementation Workshop

Dates: August 1 - 5, 2011

Tuition: The tuition fee is $700 and includes a binder of course materials.

Graduate Credit: Graduate credit is available at an additional cost. To receive credit, participants must attend the entire 5 day workshop, complete an application and meet course requirements. Further details will be shared upon request. Please indicate on your application whether you would like information about Graduate Credit.

Algebra 1

This workshop is designed for teachers who would like to engage in a coherent approach to learning and teaching algebra 1. Over the three days we will experience algebraic "habits of mind” or ways of thinking that underlie a variety of topics and techniques in algebra and high school mathematics. We will explore how to develop in students the same algebraic habits of mind and learn innovative approaches and general-purpose tools from the new NSF-funded CME Project, a comprehensive high school mathematics program developed at EDC. Throughout the workshop we will use algebraic habits of mind such as abstracting regularity from calculations and connect these experiences to middle school mathematics curriculum and classroom practice.

This workshop is appropriate for mathematics teachers of all levels as well as instructional coaches and mathematics administrators. Workshop content can be applied to different curriculum programs and is not limited to teachers of CME Project.

Dates: Session 1: July 18 - 20, 2011

            Session 2: August 1 - 3, 2011

Tuition: The tuition fee is $450 and includes a binder of course materials.

Algebra 2 & Geometry:

Over the three days participants will focus on Algebra 2 and Geometry of CME Project.

Dates: August 3 - 5, 2011

Tuition: The tuition fee is $450 and includes a binder of course materials.

Algebra 2:

This workshop is designed for teachers who would like to engage in a coherent approach to learning and teaching algebra 2. Over the two days participants will engage in activities and get a “bird’s eye view” of the course.

Dates: August 3 - 4, 2011

Tuition: The tuition fee is $300 and includes a binder of course materials.

Geometry:

This session focuses on Algebra and Geometry of CME Project. Engage in novel approaches for teaching key concepts in algebra and geometry and explore techniques to develop students' algebraic ways of thinking and habits of mind that underlie geometry and analysis such as reasoning by continuity, using approximation, and seeking invariants.

Dates: August 4 - 5, 2011

Tuition: The tuition fee is $300 and includes a binder of course materials.
