Addition/Multiplication Tables

After receiving the addition and multiplication tables from our last CME workshop, I had the posters laminated and posted them in my classroom.  However, I added a sign to each poster that reads "EXTRA CREDIT: Can you find and explain a pattern in our addition table?"

And, "EXTRA CREDIT: Can you find and explain a pattern in our multiplication table?"  The kids in my CME class are strongly motivated by grades, and an opportunity for extra credit is inspiring them to find additional patterns.  Many requested another copy of the table to study on their own.

BUT... almost more importantly, the students from my two CMP classes saw the poster and read the signs and asked if they could find a pattern too!  This excited me, and I realized that these addition/multiplication tables and the offering of extra credit may in fact motivate ALL of my students to find mathematical patterns and ultimately develop mathematical habits of mind.  If anyone sees other activities/opportunities from the CME book that we could post in the classroom to give ALL of our students something to think about, please share!
